The vast fibre optic network of the railways can be utilized to provide better safety and services to the passengers. There can be a real-time train information system put in place, based on the expample of New York Subways systems, where train running information, signalling, even measurement of every yard travelled is displayed on a giant screen, which in turn automatically routes commands to the train driver and call center operator for better communication avoiding delays. It will also provide passengers with knowledge of the whereabouts of the running train, seats availibility, any mishappenings, safety etc. Railways can also use the system to make the automatic signalling system to be fool-proof and by eliminating human error. Also, by using the optic network, and making some-sort of fool-proof system, like pressing a pedal every 15 seconds by the train driver like in German ICE trains, collisions can be avoided. There are hundreds and thousands of ideas that can make railways better using ICT, which are not too expensive for the railways. Thanks and Best Regards, Shobhit Jain

The vast fibre optic network of Railways can be pitched as Disaster Recovery mechanism for the purpose of Business continuity Plans of Organisations ; either directly to organisation who themselves own fibre optic or to those organisation who rely heavily on transmission of data.
